Love this quote by Guro Dan Inosanto, and I love how it reads.

“None of US ever do.”

If this meme is accurate, it reflects his great humility and reminds me of an epiphany I experienced as a young man training in martial arts. After three years of training as a teen, I really expected to have some grand revelation and feel much more invincible. I didn’t.  Perhaps it was the humility exemplified and taught to me by my instructors, or perhaps it reflected the uncertainty of combat. You can train for years and years, but if you turn your head left, you may catch a 2×4 coming from the right. There are no guarantees.

“All you can do is trust that it will.”

One of my escrima students had to trust his art when he was jumped by five attackers.  He was unarmed, but had trained with me for a couple of years.  He sent me the story by text because I hadn’t seen him since he moved away, a year or so earlier.

[mr hinton i just one to tell you thanks for teaching me the skills you taught me it truely saved my life tonight. i haven’t really been on the straight narrow path but i moved to xxxxxxxx to change all the bad i’ve done to really great things and its worked. tonight i was walking home from eating and chasing tail…..totaly sober didn’t have a drop to drink when i got jumped by 5 yes five dudes and i fought back like a warrior. i came out with a lot of scraped and bruises but three of the dudes deff gonna have to go to the hospital. if it wasn’t for all that you taught me i’d prolly be really bad off or dead and really just wanted to say thanks you truely saved my life plus all the cops here think im a bad ass for be such a small guy and handleing five dudes]

I just loved getting this text and knowing that he trusted in his art and I loved knowing that his hard training paid off and that he was safe.  Please comment if you have had to trust your art.

Isn’t it ironic that some of the most profound Truths are observed and spoken by some of the most humble people ?! 🙂

A native Angelino, I have had to trust my training on MANY occasions but, of all the epiphanies I’ve ever had, with regard to martial arts, it is this one that has kept me in a continual state of humility and gratitude toward God… that the whole purpose behind years of training is not to delude ourselves in thinking that we are invincible… but, rather, to simply be PREPARED (physically, mentally and emotiinally) to defend ourselves in the event that doing so becomes NECESSARY.

Indeed, it is not my “art” that I trust… but the warrior spirit within me that my practice of martial arts has cultivated. 🙂

Having said that, I must add that the most effective defensive fighters I’ve ever seen are those who, by virtue of INTENT, are most effective and formidable in the art of NOT fighting.

Hence, it comes as no surprise to me that the above mentioned words of wisdom were authored by the likes of Guro Dan ! 🙂

Great testimony Sir. I am also learning Eskrima since 2 years and it has made me more confident, agile, strong yet mentally at peace. Martial Arts is truly a process of enlightenment.
